Snarky Puppy will often march toward climax
in their ever-building songs, evolving with
layers and seeking new ways to take a song
places. The soloists add to this with intensity in
their highly skilled improvisation that doesn’t
stray from the diverse audience’s
understanding, yet they find ways to push the
bounds. Shaun Martin, a key legend (Chaka
Khan, Snoop Dogg) whom you are quite lucky
to catch on the roster, is always charismatic
and delivers scintillating solos. This time he
added a voice box and lit up the room with the
combo. All other soloists are just as impressive,
providing too many stand-out moments to list.
As their encore, Snarky Puppy introduced
Thai/Swedish singer Sirintip, one of the latest
newcomers on the Ground Up roster. Sirintip’s
silky yet crisp voice had the definition of an
R&B singer, but her music the melodic
development of a jazz singer. Over the rich
sound of Snarky Puppy, her songs were
powerful and dynamic. She seemed natural
joining the seasoned group, intermingling her
vocals with Mark Lettieri’s guitar interplay.
Sirintip’s debut album “Tribus” is out now on
the Ground Up label.
