- Thymol E. P. 1984 is antiseptic, anthelmintic and preservative.

Note that thyme is commonly used as a flavouring ingredient in foods.

Contra-indication and Side effects

1- Allergic reactions are possible, especially from topical use. No major adverse effects are expected

from ingestion of thyme.

2- Allergic  reactions    to thyme have been reported,sometimes with cross-

sensitivity to rosemary or oregano.

✓ Several authors list thyme as an emmenagogue or abortifacient

✓ Large doses of the compound thymol have been associated with abortifacient activity.

✓ Based on this information, use during pregnancy is not recommended except under the supervision of
         a qualified healthcare practitioner.

✓ No information on the safety of thyme during lactation.
✓ Large doses (over 1 g) of the compound thymol may cause abortion.
✓ In the 1970s, a combination of thymol, potassium iodide, soap, and astringents was applied as

         a topical irritant to produce abortion.
✓ This practice was considered high risk, and a number of maternal deaths were associated with

         the use of this combination.
