Toxicity and Side Effects:
Lobelia is considered LIKELY UNSAFE for most people when taken by mouth.
The therapeutic dose of lobeline is very close to the toxic dose. In use of the whole plant, minor variations
in alkaloid content could increase the potential for toxicity.
Side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, cough, dizziness, tremors, and more serious effects.
Overdose may cause many serious toxic effects including sweating, convulsions, fast heartbeat, very low
blood pressure, collapse, coma, and possibly death.
Safety:
Should not be during pregnancy and lactation.
Should not be used for more than one month consecutively.
Preparations:
Tincture of Lobelia (E. P. 1984): It contains 0.03 (not less than 0.027 and not more that 0.033) %
w/v of the total alkaloids of lobelia, calculated as lobeline.
