Fenugreek Seed
Botanical origin: Fenugreek is the dried ripe seeds of Trigonella foenum-
graecum, Family leguminosae
Constituents:
1 -Fenugreek contains about 28% of mucilage.
2- It contains also about 22% of proteins, 6% of fixed oils.
3- A steroidal saponin particularly diosginin and the alkaloid trigonelline
and choline.
Uses:
Approved by Commission E: • Loss of appetite • Inflammation of the skin
Uses: diabetes (decrease the blood glucose level), and to increase milk
production (lactagogue).
Externally, the drug is used as poultice for local inflammation, ulcers, and
eczema.
Contraindications It is contraindicated in cases of allergy to the plant
material. Owing to its stimulatory effects on the uterus, the seeds should not
be used during pregnancy Precautions Drug interactions Owing to its effect
on blood glucose levels in diabetic patients, it should only be used in
conjunction with oral antihyperglycemic agents or insulin under the
supervision of a health-care professional. Sensitization is possible through
repeated external administration of the drug.
