A. Shikimic acid pathway                 517

• The majority of aromatic compounds in living organisms are
 obtained through the shikimate PW. This PW begins with the
 condensation of a 3-C compound, phosphoenolpyruvic acid
 (PEP), and a 4-C sugar, erythrose 4P to produce shikimic acid.
