The Genetic Code Is Universal,
With a Few Exceptions
• It is used by prokaryotes and eukaryotes, across
species.
• Mitochondria contain DNA and use a slightly
different code.
– UGA encodes Trp in vertebrate mtDNA (instead of
STOP).
– AGA/AGG encodes STOP in vertebrate mtNDA
(instead of Arg).
• Mitochondria encode their own tRNAs, using 22
instead of 32.
