3. Secondary alkyl halides
▪ Both elimination and substitution compete (E2 vs SN2).
▪ For small bases: the major product is from elimination, while substitution
product is minor.
▪ For bulky bases: the only product is from E2.
4. Tertiary alkyl halides
In presence of strong base, tertiary alkyl halides undergo E2 only, as they can’t
undergo substitution by SN2.
