1- Emetine has more expectorant and less emetic action than other
alkaloids, Rio ipecac is more rich in emetine than Cartagena ipecac, so
it is preferred as expectorant.

2- In the treatment of amoebic dysentery;
• emetine hydrochloride is given by injection
• emetine with Bisthmus iodide by mouth.

3- Emetine HCl is of great value in the treatment of amoebic dysentery,
but is of no benefit in case of bacillary dysentery (needs antibiotics).

4- Dover s powder: consists of standard powder ipecac (one part) + powder
Opium (one part) + powder lactose (8 parts); Used as diaphoretic, in
case of fever; opium causes dilatation of blood vessels (increase the
effect)
