Teacher Instructions: How to Teach Penty
Teacher Instructions: Follow these steps for every letter. You may add more
activities along with these, but at the least, make sure the students get to hear
the letter name, the sound, say it out loud and pronounce it correctly. Have them
share some words that have the sound you are teaching.
Step 1: Teach the letter name, its shape, and words that have this letter. Share
a couple of words from the book with them. Then ask the students to share more
words that begin with that letter. Say any student's name that begins with the
letter you are teaching. You can also teach them to write their name in Punjabi.
Each lesson also has a short poem or a couple of sentences that have words that
begin with the letter you are teaching. Say the poem or sentences aloud. Tell the
students what they mean. Then have them sing or say it after you. This will give
the students practice in speaking Punjabi. More they speak more they will
understand the language.
Then teach how to write it. Show them how to write with your finger in the air.
Have the students follow the steps in the air. Then show them how to write the
letter on the board. Find a familiar shape in each letter. For example, ooda letter
a has a number 3 in it. Have the students write in their books.
After you have taught the lesson, watch the students work independently. Help
those who need more help.
Some pages have words made with the letters they have already learned. Have
them practice these words many time so they can read at least 10-15 words in 1
minute. More they practice, better they will become in reading Punjabi. Use
these words for spelling test every week.
A Note to Parents: Learning a language takes time. It needs daily practice to
master it. Work with your child everyday at home. Set aside 7-10 minutes each day.
Have them read the lesson to you. Have them do the homework. And have them
read the words a couple of times to you. This practice will help them remember
the symbols and sounds of each letter and encourage them to learn vocabulary.
You can also spend about two minutes each day to memorize one line of Japuji
Sahib everyday. That's all the time you need to have your child learn Punjabi
language and Japuji Sahib Paath.
