touch with it. Now Bachittar Singh was quite feeble in his build. Guru Gobind
Singh Ji asked him if he is willing to fight the drunken elephant. He said to Guru
Ji, “What is that elephant? It is even smaller than an ant if your blessings are
with me.” He felt so confident because he had full faith in Guru Ji and knew that
Guru Ji’s blessings were with him.
Guru Ji was very proud of him. He gave him the Nagini Barchha (a coiled spear). He
went out on his horse and pierced the elephant in the middle of its forehead. The
wounded elephant went crazy with pain; it ran back to its owners and wreaked
havoc in their army, killing many of their own soldiers under its feet and with the
sword in its trunk. Bhai Bachittar Singh returned unharmed to the fort. It was the
feeling of Chardikala that enabled him to face the drunken elephant and the
armies of the enemy.
Where do the Sikhs get the Chardikala from? It comes from Naam Simran,
Gurbani and full faith in Guru Ji. There are many references to Chardikala in
Gurbani. The person who has Chardikala in his/her heart is described as having
these attitudes:
duKu nwhI sBu suKu hI hY ry eykY eykI nyqY]
burw nhI sBu Blw hI hY ry hwr nhI sB jyqY]
The person who lives in chardikala has no pain; he is totally at peace;
with his eyes he sees only Waheguru.
He does not see anything bad or evil, all is good; there is no defeat; he feels victorious.
We also repeat this word every time we finish our Ardas.
