ARE YOU READY
FOR THE SINGLE-USE
PLASTIC BAN?
Your Starter for 10?
Are all single-use items are being
banned from 1 October or just
some?
Chances are, if you are an independent
foodservice operator you may not even be
aware that from 1 October a number of
plastic single-use plastic items will be
banned. And even if you are aware, you may
not know which ones and in what
circumstances.
Therefore, It’s was minus 10 points for
Defra minister, Rebecca Pow, given her very
confusing interview on a recent BBC Radio 4
You and Yours programme (Monday 14th
August),
The big issue for operators is the late
publication of the guidance and the lack of a
public awareness campaign by the UK
government. While alternatives are more
expensive – adding costs, which inevitably
will have to be passed on to your
customers.
To be banned on 1 October are single-use
plastic plates, bowls, and trays, but not SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER. 2023 | ISSUE 32
when used as packaging. Packaging is an
item that is filled, and the contents are paid
for at the point of purchase. In this
circumstance, plastic plates, bowls, and
trays are not being sold to the public – only
their contents.
