         be reading them old ones any more.’ And she gave her a let-
         ter, which Emmy took, and read.
            ‘I must see you,’ the letter said. ‘Dearest Emmy—dearest
         love— dearest wife, come to me.’
            George and her mother were outside, waiting until she
