Powering
Down
Along with heating systems, technology has improved
many other devices and systems in the home. The term
“zero net energy,” or “zero net building” is one you will hear
with increasing frequency. The idea is to build and
remodel homes to use no more energy than they produce
on site. As we discussed in the first part of this
publication, the best approach is to address major issues
first: siting, location and so on, then work your way up
from fundamentals to renewable energy.
SSUMING YOU’VE ALREADY addressed
the basics—better insulation, high-
performance windows, and so on—
A where do you go from here? It’s time to
focus on reducing costs of hot water, lighting,
appliances and “phantom” devices.
