This development consists of a modern 45,800 SF industrial warehouse structure ideally located near I-95 in Norwalk. The site’s highly varied soil conditions required design and construction to address the mixed subsurface conditions with a combination of filling, excavating, and a retaining wall to reach proposed grades.
Environmental Solutions Unearthed:
Developed soil profiles and parameters based on existing subsurface information and reviewed existing drawings to estimate foundation sizes.
Created a complex 2D model to develop longitudinal and transverse stiffness values for lateral, vertical, and rotational movements.
Performed analyses for both “untreated” and “treated” soils, to show the effect of the strength increase on the stiffness values.
Estimated bearing capacities for the improved arch block foundations.

  SCHOOL DEVELOPMENT, CT
Several areas of the 236,000 SF project site were underlain by materials impacted by various environmental constituents from former site uses. GEODesign’s environmental group was able to seamlessly coordinate with our geotechnical engineers and advise the owner and architect on how best to manage these materials.
Environmental Solutions Unearthed:
Preliminary and final geotechnical reports with recommendations for foundation design, construction, and minimization of excavation for the foundations to avoid environmental contingencies.
Development of alternate foundation design utilizing rammed-aggregate piers and micro-piles in areas of unsuitable fill in order to minimize excavation and disposal costs.
Phased environmental investigations including beneath existing building floors and during building demolition, to preserve the tight construction schedule.
Soil management plans to control soil movement
and minimize the cost for off-site surplus soil disposal.

NEWARK BAY BRIDGE, NJ
Connecting Newark and Bayonne, this steel arch bridge’s anomalous movements were detected at the deck joints of three bridge piers, with one possibility being the movements were due to foundation rotations. GEODesign was the lead geotechnical engineer for the evaluation of the existing foundations and the design of possible additional supplemental foundations.
Environmental + Geotechnical Solutions Unearthed:
Designed and managed a subsurface exploration program which included water borings with soil and rock sampling and laboratory testing to estimate the soil and rock strength.
Developed soil profiles and 3-D models of the existing foundations to calculate foundation stiffness parameters, used by the structural engineer for the superstructure evaluation.
Conceptual foundation retrofit options that included driven piles and large diameter drilled shafts.
