Description:

Like other cities, Kigali is and will be significantly affected by climate change. And this would have serious
consequences for health, livelihoods and material assets, especially for urban populations living in informal
and vulnerable neighborhoods. With the acceleration of demographic growth, urban agglomerations are be-
coming incapable of integrating the large flows of populations wishing to settle in cities, hence the prolifera-
tion and densification of non-regulatory neighborhoods, which are the basis of multiple urban dysfunctions.
In addition, Kigali is experiencing an increase in episodes of intense precipitation. These two phenomena
have made the presence of water in the city a danger. However, during this study focused on the Nyabugogo
neighborhood, placing the problem of flood risks at the heart of the urban redevelopment project will effec-
tively improve the environmental, economic and social condition as well as the attractiveness and the city’s
competitiveness by providing eco-responsible solutions in order to:
        • Reduce and control the water flow for better management of the hydrographic basin
        • Control the runoff of water in this area which is densely urbanized and increase the rainwater reten-
        tion capacity
        • Open up this marginalized urban territory and find living connections with other urban spaces
        • Boost the neighborhood with the implementation of an architectural project integrating social and
        functional diversity.
