characterized by two elements: the enlightenment of the people and the endowment of hope for

               the future beyond this world.


                       The representative preachers during this time were Ik Doo Kim and Young Do Lee.

               Kim’s predominant preaching themes were “the cross of Jesus, the blood of Christ, the


               resurrection, heaven, and repentance.” He also preached against social evils such as superstitious

               practice and lax morality.  His sermon structure was mainly topical, “in which life (context) and

               the gospel (text) were balanced.”   The mystical trend of preaching emerged through the

               preaching of Reverend Young-Do Lee, a Methodist preacher.   During this tumultuous time,

               people were despondent in every aspect of their lives and eager for a solid hope.

                       Preachers like Rev. Lee preached dualistic and mystic sermons, emphasizing other-

               worldliness.   His unique preaching style betrayed no persistent form or style and no preparation

               other than fervent prayer.  His policy was to follow the leading of Holy Spirit during his

               preaching moments.  Chung reports that “[h]is sermon was way beyond or totally different from


               [a] biblical or interpretive sermon. And his preaching was emotional and mystical, being

               dependent on subjective experience like the way of Schleiermacher.”
