CLINICAL PEARLS
Most patients with gallstones are asymptomatic.
Transabdominal US is the imaging modality of choice for the diagnosis of cholelithiasis
(sensitivity, 97%; specificity, 95%).
Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is the preferred surgical procedure for symptomatic
cholelithiasis.
Acute acalculous cholecystitis is associated with bile stasis and gallbladder ischemia.
Prophylactic cholecystectomy is not indicated in patients with asymptomatic gallstones.
