The Concrete City
These are images from a black-and-white portfolio of a Pennsylvania ghost town called The Concrete City, oc- cupied from approximately 1913-1924. Comprised of housing for high-level workers of the local Truesdale Colliery, the town was considered a paragon of industrial housing: twenty identical duplexes all mirror images of one another. The community’s downfall was a contro- versy around a conversion to indoor toilets. When a local ordinance required installation of a public sewer, the cost was deemed too high and the duplexes were aban- doned. An attempt was made to dynamite the buildings, but to no avail. All the buildings still stand.
