By Stephen Petegorsky
Petegorsky is an artist and freelance photographer. He received his MFA in Photography from RISD, and has taught at Amherst, Smith, and Hampshire colleges, and at UConn. These images are part of Clearstories, a series based on photographs of animal specimens including small mammals, fish, reptiles, and birds, which are soaked in an enzyme solution to clear the soft tissue. Stains are then used to color bones and cartilage, and the photographs are digitally altered, with colors added or changed. The backgrounds are created from other abstracted images of the natural world. His work has been exhibited internationally, and is in collections in the United States and Europe. Recognized for his black-and-white landscapes, he has also documented the work of the Polus Center for Social and Economic Development, an agency working internationally to improve the lives of victims of conflict and people with disabilities.
