Masked Numbers 234
507
When letters or shapes are used instead of numbers
in an expression, they are called masked numbers. In 801
these expressions, same shapes represent same
numbers and different shapes represent different
numbers. The first letter or shape for each number
cannot be “0”.

Worm-eaten Expression

When numbers are erased in an expression, it is called a
worm-eaten expression. In worm-eaten addition, think
about the sum of each place value and any regrouped
numbers; in worm-eaten subtraction, change it to worm-
eaten addition.

EExxpplloorree Find the hundreds, tens, and ones places of each
number in the addition expression when each

shape represents a different number.

In the sum, the hundreds place is made by the 1
regrouped sum of the tens place, so is 1.
