Activity 1 Symmetry

jOb ective Understand the concept of symmetry and line of symmetry.

1. Textbook Instructions Activity 1 Symmetry line of symmetry

Have students use what they have learned Learn about symmetry.
about line of symmetry to find symmetrical
shapes and then find line of symmetry in A figure has symmetry if it can be
different shapes. folded in half so that the 2 halves
match exactly.
1. Have students instantly find shapes that A line that divides a figure into
are not symmetrical. 2 congruent parts is a line of symmetry.
2. Have students find shapes that are
symmetrical and shape that are not 1 . Find the figure that does not have symmetry.
symmetrical using line of symmetry.
Have them understand that some shapes do
not have the line of symmetry.

2 . Find the figure that does not have a line of symmetry.

2. Build Understanding

Some students think that there is line of symmetry when a line passes through a center point of a figure.
Clarify the concept of symmetry with students using this common error.
When a shape is symmetrical, the line of symmetry must be in the middle and the shapes on the opposite
sides must fit exactly over one another when folded. Remind students that these two opposite shapes must
have the same shape and size, and the other half of the shape must look like the reflected image on a
mirror.
