Basic Concepts Passing Tunnels
The distance that a train must travel to completely pass through a tunnel is
equal to the sum of the length of the train and the length of the tunnel.
Length Length
of tunnel of train
Distance that a train must travel
Just before going into the tunnel Just after passing the tunnel
Example How long will it take for a to train travel 150 m per minute to
completely pass through a 1,300-m long tunnel? Note that the
length of the train is 50 m.
Class Notes
The length of the tunnel is 1,300 m and the length of the train is 50 m. Therefore, the total
distance that the train must travel is m.
Distance that 150 minutes to
the train must travel
The train is traveling 150 m per minute. So, it will take
completely pass through the tunnel.
Try It Again A train is 80 m long. If this train is traveling 700 m per minute,
how long will it take to completely cross a bridge that is
8,320 m long?
