Unit 3 READING 1

T he most famous spider in the world
is the black widow. The black widow
lives mostly in the Americas. Black
widows are the largest web-making
spiders. The females are about an inch
and a half long. They are much larger and
more dangerous than the males. You can easily tell the female from the
male spiders. The female has a red spot on its stomach.

The black widow has a very powerful poison. It is 15 times more deadly
than rattlesnake poison. Because black widows only use a little poison in
each bite, their bites rarely kill people. Even so, a bite from a black widow
will make you very sick, and you will need to go to the hospital.
