D o you know that certain kinds of food
frequently appear in fairy tales? In fact,
most fairy tales show foods like tasty fruit
or candy. However, these are not always
good for the characters in fairy tales. In fact,
they are usually symbols of dangers.
_______________, in Snow White, the main
character almost dies when she is eating an
apple. Also, in Hansel and Gretel, two children eat
a candy house. But a witch in the house tries to eat
them later! Using food like this is not new. It was a symbol of danger in a
story from thousands of years ago. In the Odyssey, the heroes drink a witch’s
wine and turn into animals.
English Usage

Money and happiness do not always go together.
Not every man is born with a silver spoon in his mouth.
