Unit 4 READING 2
A lmost everyone knows about
the Pyramids and the Sphinx.
But not many people know about
the Moai on Easter Island. The Moai
are huge stone heads. They are on
all sides of Easter Island and face
the sea. The Moai are a mystery.
We know almost nothing about them.
Easter Island is a small island in the Pacific. The nearest land is 2,000 miles
away. How did the builders of the Moai get to Easter Island? Making each
Moai probably took over a year. This is because each head is very big and
heavy. Amazingly, there are over 500 of these stone heads. How did the
people of Easter Island build so many of these huge stone heads? Scientists
want to know. There is, however, another important question. After they
built the Moai, the people of Easter Island tore them all down. Why did they
do that?
English Usage
• not many ~

• almost nothing [no, never]
