Throughout history, most people with

darker skin have lived in very hot

places. On the other hand, those

with lighter skin have usually lived

in the northern countries.

So, why is skin color so different?

In the human body, there is a chemical called *melanin, which is brown. It

protects the human skin by taking in harmful sunlight. People in hot areas

need a lot of melanin because the sunlight there is very strong. However,

people in the northern areas don’t need it as much because there is less

sunlight. Therefore, we can say that different skin color is a way of adjusting

to the natural environment.

* melanin: a natural substance in human skin
