Unit 1 READING 2

T he moon has no air. It doesn’t snow,
rain or get windy on the moon
because there is no air. We have oxygen
here to breathe, but there is no
breathable oxygen on the moon. So the
astronauts have to take their own
oxygen to breathe there. Also, on the
surface of the moon there are many
craters. Because there is no air, lots of meteors crash into the moon all the
time and make these craters. They don’t slow down and burn up in the air as
they do on earth.

The Earth has six times as much gravity as the moon does. If your weight is
60kg here, you will be 10kg on the moon. That is why when you watch the
news about astronauts, you see them flying in their spaceships.

The moon travels around the Earth at about 3,700 km per hour. The shape
of the moon appears to change according to its position relative to the
Earth. When the Earth is on one side and the sun directly on the other, it is a
new moon. This is when the moon appears dark. A full moon occurs when
the Earth is between the sun and the moon. At that time, the moon appears
bright and perfectly round.
