Unit 2 READING 1
F or hundreds of years, modern societies
have wondered how the ancient Egyptians
mummified their dead. Mummification keeps a
dead body from decaying. When a king died, his
servants preserved his body by taking out all of
his organs and allowing the body to dry out. The
body was then rubbed with oils and wrapped
with sheets of cloth that were specially
prepared. After the body was covered in this
special cloth, it was placed in a tomb. The tomb was in
the middle of a pyramid and was filled with treasure and food.
Why did the Egyptians spend so much time and energy on ?
Many ancient Egyptians believed that life on earth was better than life after
death. If a person did enough good things during his earthly life, he would
have a chance to be reborn on earth. If not, he would have to stay in the
underworld forever. This belief is why mummification was practiced in
Egypt for thousands of years.
