Reading Comprehension
After World War II, many children needed help. They lost their homes and
parents. They were sick and hungry. So the United Nations wanted to help them.
It made a program, UNICEF. Children in European and Asian countries got help.
UNICEF gave them food and drugs.
World War II ended 60 years ago. But UNICEF still helps children today. There
are many poor children in the world. Some live on the streets. Their parents are
very poor. Sometimes their parents are dead. So the children beg for food and
money. UNICEF tries to help these children.
In Africa, many children are sick. Some have very bad sickness, like AIDS.
They do not have money to buy medicine. UNICEF builds hospitals to help them.
In North America, most children collect candy on Halloween. But some children
collect money. Then they give this money to UNICEF. UNICEF gives the money to
poor children in the United States and Canada. It can make a happy holiday for
everyone.
