Introduction

Writing is a complicated process. Students are often intimidated by the suggestion
that they put their thoughts on paper. Where to start, what to say, how to say it, the
right way, the wrong way…all these doubts can cause a great deal of anxiety. And
yet, the ability to write competently is essential in today's world. It has become a
reflection of general intellect and ability.

This writing series attempts to alleviate these doubts by focusing on five
target traits that will lead your students to exemplary writing. Numerous
research projects have shown that the teaching of these traits leads to
better, more confident writers.

Explanations and examples were carefully chosen so as not to
overwhelm students, but to provide some background knowledge of
the trait so that students can move forward to practice and eventually
master each one.

The exercises were developed to give students practice that is focused
exclusively on each individual trait. As they progress through the exercise
page of each chapter, they should begin to feel confident with each skill.

Each chapter ends with a writing assignment that allows students to practice,
not only the targeted trait, but also other skills from previous chapters.
Writing skills cannot be taught in isolation. They are part of the process and
must be taught as such.
