Unit 1 An Iceman
Reading Comprehension
An iceman
Interviewer: Welcome to Jobs in the Past! Today we talk with an iceman from
the year 1900! Please tell us about the iceman‘s job.
Iceman: I bring ice to people‘s homes. Factories make the ice. Then, every
day, I carry big blocks of ice to the homes. I carry the ice on my wagon. A horse
pulls the wagon, because we don‘t have cars or trucks.
Interviewer: You have a big job! Do you work every day?
Iceman: Yes, I do. When the day ends, I feel very tired. The ice is really
heavy! But I have to do the same thing every day. People need ice, because ice
can keep food fresh. They can‘t store the food for a long time without me! My job
brings happiness to people!
Interviewer: But people can make ice in their (A) , can‘t they?
Iceman: What? We don‘t have them! We have iceboxes! An icebox is a
wooden box, and it has a big block of ice inside. People can use a block for about
a week. When it melts, I bring more ice to people.
Interviewer: But your job is no longer necessary because the (A)
came out!
