8 Solid Figures

Basic Concepts Characteristics of Prisms and Pyramids

A prism is a solid figure that has two parallel

congruent polygons as a base and a top, and

rectangles as side faces.

A pyramid is a solid figure that has one polygon as a Prism Pyramid
base, and triangles as side faces.

Both prisms and pyramids are named for the shape of their bases.

The following table shows the number of faces, vertices, and edges of

each prism or pyramid.

Triangular Faces Vertices Edges Triangular Faces Vertices Edges

Example If the sum of vertices and edges of a solid figure is 22, how many
sides does the base of this pyramid have?

Class Notes . .
.
The number of vertices in a pyramid with a base of edges is
The number of edges in a pyramid with a base of edges is 22,
Since (number of vertices) (number of edges)
Therefore, the number of sides of the base is .

Try It Again The following figure is the base of a pyramid. Find the sum of
the number of faces, vertices, and edges of this pyramid.
