9 Section of a Solid Figure
Basic Concepts Different Shapes of Sections
A section is the plane figure that results from slicing a solid figure across
a plane.
The following shows the shapes of sections that come from a cube.
Triangle Square Pentagon Hexagon
There are other shapes that can be made, but the maximum possible
number of edges is 6 so that the plane intersects all the faces of the
cube. The number of edges of the section cannot exceed 6.
Example Write the names of the sections that can be made from the
following triangular prism.
Class Notes .
A section passing through 3 faces is the shape of a
A section passing through 4 faces is the shape of a .
A section passing through 5 faces is the shape of a .
You can slice through a maximum number of faces on a triangular
polyhedron, so a polygon with more than 6 sides cannot be made.
Try It Again Draw a line on the regular tetrahedron to make a
section with the shape of a square.
