11 Fibonacci Sequence
Basic Concepts Fibonacci Sequence
Fibonacci sequence is a sequence in which each term is the sum of the
two previous terms.
The Fibonacci sequence can be seen in everyday life.
Piano keys: 8 white keys and 5 black keys make each of the 13 octaves.
The black keys are grouped by 2's and 3's to make the
Fibonacci sequence of 2, 3, 5, 8, and 13.
Flower petals: Most flower petals bloom in numbers of 3, 5, 8, and 13.
Example Find the pattern in the box shown below. Apply the pattern to the
sequence and write the correct numbers in the blanks.
1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34,
, 5, , , 23,
Class Notes
The pattern found in the box shown above is a sequence, in which each term is
the sum of the two previous terms.
Let the 1st number be represented by , the next number after 5 is 5. Therefore, the next
number is 5 ( 5) .
, 5, , , 23
23 is the sum of the two previous terms, 5 and . 5 23,
so .
Therefore, the numbers are , 5, , , and 23.
