[ PASSAGE B ]
Antibiotics are used to treat and prevent bacterial infection by killing or inhibiting the
growth of bacteria. Ever since they became widely available in the mid-1940s, antibiotics as CHAPTER 01
powerful medicines have saved countless lives around the world. Antibiotics can be used
to treat a wide variety of infections without causing many side effects. They are also quite
affordable even for those who do not have health insurance and easy to administer, either
orally or via injection.
Antibiotics, however, are not effective in treating infections caused by viruses such as cold
or flu, and may be harmful when overused or taken inappropriately. They can possibly
cause an allergic reaction for some people and trigger other symptoms such as digestion
issues, discomfort, nausea, diarrhea, and sensitivity to light. If antibiotics are not prescribed
at the right dosage, the bacteria residing in the patient’s body can build a resistance,
meaning antibiotics may not work well in the future. Hence one should keep in mind that
there are pros and cons of antibiotics and consult the doctor to decide whether or not to
take antibiotics for treatment and how much of them to take.
