General Microbiology & Immunology (PM 401) Second level Semester 4 2024/2025

                  C. Antimicrobial substances

                 1. Interferons

                 2.Antimicrobial peptide
                 3. Iron binding proteins

                 4. The complement system
              1. Interferons

                - It is a glycoprotein with a molecular weight of 28,000- 45,000 daltons.

                - It acts nonspecifically to inhibit the spread of viral infections

                - -IFN and -IFN: Produced by virus infected cells.

                - They induce uninfected cells to produce antiviral proteins (AVPs) that inhibit

                    viral replication.

                - -IFN: Produced by lymphocytes. It causes neutrophils and macrophages to

phagocytes bacteria. Also, involved in tumor immunology.

               2.Antimicrobial peptide

They are cationic molecules released by neutrophils, monocytes and macrophages

               Ex: defensins
