When Michael asked me for Ashley’s hand in marriage over Thanksgiving in 2018, his first words were: “I can’t wait to be married to your daughter...” But wait he would.
Silver Linings
F or defense attorneys, New Years Day represents not only new beginnings, but when our law practices reset to zero. But the reset could wait, January 1, 2020 reflected an opportunity that was unfathomable back in the day, 1983, when Debbie and I graduated from the University of Oregon—The Rose Bowl, the Granddaddy of Them All. A road trip to Pasadena, a last second Duck win over the Wisconsin Badgers, 28-27, and a truly magnificent start to the new year. We had good reason
for optimism for the year to come.
Our daughter Ashley and future son-in-law Michael were engaged to be married on September 16, 2020, in Carmel Valley, CA; our son Ryan had returned to his high school teaching and coaching positions in Madrid, Spain; Emily, our baby, would finish her Junior year from Elon University in North Carolina (where they call it the third year); and Debbie and I were “empty nesters” with big plans. Three weeks later, the first American, in Washington State, was diagnosed as infected with the Coronavirus, after traveling to Wuhan, China, believed to be ground zero for the virus.
