My parents grew up listening to Jimi Hendrix and Quincy Jones, both of whom graduated from Seattle’s Garfield High School. Family legend says that my stepdad dated Ann Wilson of Heart before meeting my mom. Growing up in the Seattle suburbs in the early 1990s allowed me to witness the evolution of grunge. We watched local bands like Nirvana explode into international superstars, and our high school hangouts became backdrops for movies like “Singles.”
Our friends’ high school and college bands, like Modest Mouse, were
signed to major record labels as our city emergedintotheworld’sspotlight. I am so thankful that I grew up where I did, when I did. Thankfully, those not as fortunate can experience the Seattle music scene for themselves by visiting MoPop, the Museum of Pop Culture, at the Seattle Center.
