Deposition Drills How to Teach Deposition Skills
Who Can Teach Deposition Skills
Who should lead the exercises in this book? Any attorney with several or more years experience taking and defending depositions. I’m remiss to provide a hard number of depositions taken and defended for instructors. Some attorneys have taken hundreds, even thousands, of depositions. Some have only taken dozens. Yet, each of those attorneys, depending on the depositions
they’ve taken and defended, and the preparations that went into them, may be equally qualified to teach others deposition skills. Being an effective teacher isn’t dependant on having taken hundreds of depositions. It’s dependent on learning from whatever depositions you have taken and constantly improving your skill set, ensuring your future depositions are more productive and more effective. Curious, thoughtful, reflective deposition takers make the best deposition instructors.
How to Train Others to Teach Deposition Skills
If you have a large firm with many young associates, you will need numerous deposition instructors. You should pick those who enjoy mentoring and teaching and who have displayed a good rapport with your young lawyers. Share this book with them and have them read through it and the exercises it contains. The drills are self explanatory and easy to master and use. If you’re going to teach deposition skills using several instructors and many young lawyers, it’s best to have one or more sessions with your instructors where you decide how often instructors will meet with young lawyers, what exercises they will lead and what feedback they will provide. You want consistency and direction to ensure any training is helpful, fruitful and constructive.
