Deposition Drills How to Teach Deposition Skills
Why Write a Book about Teaching Deposition Skills
Most litigation firms teach their young lawyers deposition skills, but many have no formal approach to do so. Often, it is a hodgepodge approach of shadowing partners, reading deposition transcripts and attending skills CLE. This approach helps, but is far from ideal. Creating a more formal deposition skills program, implementing it and tweaking it as you go is the best approach to teach deposition skills. This book walks you through a library of exercises and drills you can use to effectively and efficiently teach deposition skills. This interactive approach allows firms to role play with their young lawyers and show them first hand why we do what we do in depositions and how to do it.
Teaching Deposition Skills
Anyone who has taken their share of depositions can teach what they do to others. Each of us can sit down, analyze our process of taking and defending depositions, and share our wisdom, approach and skills. The more depositions we take, the more we learn and the better we get and the more insightful the knowledge we can pass onto others. So, whether you think you can or not, if you’re a litigator and have spent years taking depositions, you can pass along and entrust that skill set to others. It requires self reflection and deep thought as to why you do what you do in depositions and why it works (and when it doesn’t work, why it doesn’t). And the act of thinking through what you do and why you do it, will not only facilitate you teaching others, you will be teaching yourself in the process. You will find yourself questioning what you do, how you can improve yourself and make your next deposition even better.
