March's SHINING STAR: Matt Karkheck
Matt Karkhecks may be ob- served as a “quiet young man behind the scenes” but put a pair of skis on his feet and he demands attention. Even off the slopes, he is described as “a high character kid” that is “constantly preparing” (athletics and studies) and leads, not by voice, but by his own actions and work ethic.
When we asked his two coaches to tell us their thoughts of this month’s Shining Star, we felt it fitting to keep it to their own words.

Matt Karkheck is a Senior at Newfound Regional High School and has been a 4-year athlete on the Alpine Ski Team. Matt has been skiing since he was a little over 4 years old and started ski racing in Mid- dle School. In his high school racing career, Matt consistently placed 1st for the NRHS Boys
many times during his competi- tion years. Being an athlete on the Ski Team can sometimes be difficult, since during race sea- son, students are out a day and a half each week for mountain practices and race days.
This year was certainly differ- ent with limitations on the num- ber of skiers allowed to compete, and a shorter race season due to COVID 19. Practices, or Dry Land training took place on weekday mornings at the HS Gymnasium at 6:30 am and after practice, students would attend the regular academic day. Matt showed his dedication by maintaining an A average in all his classes during t the ski season. Matt was awarded the NHIAA Student Athlete Award in the past and maintained a 3.69 GPA during this ski season. Besides ski racing Matt’s been part of the Soccer and Baseball programs at Newfound during his 4 years at Newfound. Matt’s
determination and focus showed on both the ski hill as well as in class.” As both his coach and his father, I’m very proud of Matt’s accomplishments both on the hill and his focus on academics "Matt is looking to pursue a de- gree in Engineering in college. He will certainly be missed next season, but helped us build a strong ski program at Newfound and we wish him all the luck with his future endeavors. _____________________

I have had the pleasure of being part of Matt Karkheck's High School Alpine racing career for the past 4 years. Although I am considered a “coach” there was little I could do to help Matt with his rac- ing career. When he joined our team as a freshman he was our best and most dedicated skier and nothing has changed over the past 4 years.
Matt has also made consis- tent appearances in the top 10 in both Slalom and Giant Slalom over the years. The Lakes Dis- trict as well as some of the other DIII schools have skiers with much more training time on the hill but Matt still managed to show steady improvement each year and was always in the hunt.
He has always had a great attitude about our morning training sessions and if it wasn’t for him it would have been very difficult for our team to have grown over the years. Although he maintains a rigorous training schedule of his own during the offseason he still makes sure to get the most out of our time to- gether.
Matt is a model student ath- lete. I have had Matt as a student in PreCalculus and AP Calculus.
He maintains a difficult work- load while dealing with the chal- lenges of a challenging Alpine schedule. In the classroom he is always eager to get work done and accepts any challenge.
We will definitely miss Matt next year and thank him for helping to get the team headed in the right direction.
