Photo Contest Winners Announced for the Alexandria
By Donna rhoDes
Conservation Commission’s 2022 Calendar
ALEXANDRIA – On Dec. 1, Alexandria’s Con- servation Commission an- nounced the winners of their fifth annual calendar photo contest, with three of the beautiful “Out and About In Alexandria” themed en- tries receiving prizes for first, second and third place.
Commission chair Jenni-
fer Tuthill led the town’s Mu- nicipal Building reception and thanked everyone for
the 55 submissions they re- ceived for the upcoming cal- endar. Those included floral close-ups, some of the rural homes that are prevalent in
the community, dogs loving their country life, reptiles, amphibians, and scenery throughout the sea- sons.
Judging this year’s entries was Tom Guilmette, a local profes- sional photographer. As he went through the photos the com- mission received, Tuthill said he looked for focus and clarity that would translate well when en- larged for the calendar and pic- tures with a clear focal point that caught the viewer’s eye.
Carolyn Sharp took home both first and second prizes for her close-up photography. First place was a most interesting photo of ice-coated ferns in her

yard. “The frost gave it a little composition,” she said. Her second-place entry was a surprise photo she snapped of lupines in her backyard. Sharp said she took several photos of them; then, she discovered something she didn’t initially notice through the camera lens while look- ing them over. “When I looked at them later, there just happened to be a bum- blebee in one, so I cropped it up, and this is what I came up with,” said Sharp.
In Guilmette’s opinion, Tuthill said the bee flying right toward the lens turned a photo of a flower into a
prize-winning piece. However, Tuthill herself received third prize for her lovely shot of an au- tumn tree in a mist-covered field.
The calendars featuring the top 12 submissions are now avail- able for purchase. Photos chosen this year were sent in by Audrey
West (January); Heidi Meyer (February); Carolyn Sharp (March); Ron Maclean (April); Melissa Winters (May); Carolyn Sharp (June); Bob Piehler (July); Melissa Winters (August); Jenni- fer Tuthill (September); Jennifer Tuthill (October); Bob Piehler (November); and Audrey West (December).
Other worthy competitors were Andreas Lehner, Marla Walls, Mary Hamry, Mary Leh- ner, Mike Pepitas, Nancy Whit- man, Jennifer Anne, Jane Sparks, Jane Anne Silverman, and Tom Larson.
Everyone interested in order- ing a copy of the 2022 calendars will have two options this time. An 8&1/2 x11-inch calendar is available for $9.99 but will have no notations of holidays or other important dates throughout the year. For $19.99, however, the exact same calendar is avail- able with those dates of interest
printed on each month.

To purchase either of the two, people can drop by the Alexan- dria Selectmen’s Office for order forms, a pamphlet with informa- tion on the competition and the Conservation Commission, and a chance to see all of this year’s photo entries on display at the selectmen’s meeting room.
The 2023 Calendar compe- tition is already underway, and residents and visitors alike are en- couraged to keep their cameras handy to snap photos for the next theme, “Wildlife Around Alexan- dria.” The only requirement for entries is that all are taken within the Town of Alexandria. From now until next fall, submissions will be accepted by email at al- exandrianh@metrocast.net, with “ATTN: ACC” in the subject line. Each entry must include the photographer’s name, contact in- formation, and the location of all photos sent in.
