Patten Brook Pony Rides Is Back In Action Community
ALEXANDRIA - For 1,000 years Icelanders have relied upon their horses for transportation and labor. The Icelandic breed has been developed to meet those needs. The Icelandic horse is a multigaited, hardy, adaptable an- imal that can be ridden for plea- sure or worked in a harness.
Technically ponies, (because of their smaller stature) these sturdy animals remain a pure breed because no horses of any kind may be imported into Ice- land. Due to their hardiness and trainability they have become a popular breed outside of Iceland, including the United States.
In the town of Alexandria, in the lakes region, Patten Brook Farm relies upon a small herd of

Icelandic horses for pleasure riding. They form the backbone of Patten Brook Pony Rides, started by Jenny Tuthill four years ago. While offering pony
rides to enthusiastic children at local fairs and gatherings, Tuth- ill realized that many of today’s young- sters, in contrast to previous generations, lack first hand expe- rience with horses. As a former elemen- tary school teacher she recognized that there was a need to be filled.
The focus of Pat- ten Brook Pony rides is on children occasionally be- ginning as young as 2. It aims to
introduce them to many aspects of horse care; from riding to grooming. The Icelandic horses, which children meet at the farm, range in age from 16 to 28 and are throughly experienced with riders of all ages and types. Par- ticipants are led by a handler in a corral and on trails. Vari- ous riding options are available. The property has several miles of trails in woods and fields, as well as a ring and a corral. Hour or half hour rides are offered. Horses can be shared between riders for an hour, or each rider can ride their own horse. Hel- mets are provided and horses are
under the control of a handler at all times. Patten Brook Pony Rides operates year round, rain or shine. Birthday parties can be hosted at the farm or the horses can come to you! Phone Jenny Tuthill at 603-744-6883 to book a ride or for further information.
When one little girl exclaimed “Oh! They have FUR!” after standing in line at the Hebron fair, Jenny knew it was time to move forward with her idea of providing horse rides at their farm. The Tuthills know that rid- ers leaving their farm know more than the fact that horses have fur!
