Town of Bristol Proposed Public Safety Building
By BRittany amalfi
The town of Bristol is pro- posing new public safety build- ings for both the police and fire department for various reasons. The police and fire departments work tirelessly to keep the com- munity safe, and in order to keep these strong divisions working ef- ficiently, they need to have a solid home base. Both departments have come to the point where the buildings that house them are not efficient enough to properly maintain their demanding day- to-day tasks. Hence, a proposal is in place for a new building that would adequately support both Bristol Police and Fire.
The issues with the current police building involve but are not limited to—
• Outdated building
• The building never being de- signed to hold a police station but a town office, causing a dysfunctional layout for police.
• No sally port
• A lot of exposure outdoors
causing for high-risk situations
• A split-level building
• Two entrances and one being
the basement which is only ac- cessible from a ramp, so trans- portation of a prisoner can be difficult.
• High-risk booking facility
• Limited space for the holding
cell
• Small and limited shower
space
• Two restrooms that do not
contain the showers
• No running water or a sink in
the kitchen
• Small locker room
• One small interview room
• Overall accessibility issues
The issues with the current fire station involve but are not limited to—
• Outdated building as well as
outgrown the building with the
growing staff
• Lack of apparatus space
• The front office is a smaller,
limited space and can get
packed quick
• Only two dorms for the staff • One multipurpose room that
can get tight quick with the number of occurrences going on
• Limited space for gear as well as inadequate space to actually put it on
• A vehicle sitting outside under a built shed being exposed to the elements frequently
Also, around the year 2000, the fire station merged with EMS and became a full-time fire and EMS agency. So now, they are bringing in more ambulances ca- reer staff and continued to fill out the building where it has met its max capacity.
After looking at several buildings to find one that had what the departments were looking for in terms of features, they found that The Farmington Public Safety Building had a layout that served

as a blueprint for the efficiency of their desired building. The fea- tures of The Farmington Public Safety Building include but are not limited to—
More accessibility. An open entrance through an outer door into a spacious lobby with two separate rings for police and fire • An inner lobby where officers
can conduct minor interviews • A training room that can be
used for multiple purposes
• More restrooms
• Large and organized central
records room
• Interview room with audio and
visual recording
• Patrol officer squad den with
each patrolmen having their
own desk
• Larger booking room with
prisoner restroom
• Sallyport for safer prisoner
transports
• Better holding cells
• Large evidence room
• Locker rooms, fitness rooms,
and bathrooms with showers
• Heated floors where fire trucks
are kept
• Bunk rooms
• Electronics area for PD
and Fire
• Large storage space
The proposed new building will be located where the current police station resides. The plan would be to tear down the exist- ing building and build the new facility on that property.
The residents of Bristol will have the opportunity to vote for or against the proposed building at the town meeting on Saturday, March 12th.
