ice fishing as well. I just need to figure it out. It is a steep learn- ing curve. So it’s not as simple as drilling a hole and dropping your line in, or is it?
The quest continues, I am yet to land a fish through the ice, al- though I think I am getting closer to it. Trying to get it done on the cheap and not invest in a lot of ice fishing centric gear because I am not so sure I am hooked on it yet.
Hopefully, next month I will update with better news and proof. Good luck to all you brav- ing the elements, maybe I will see you on the ice and get some pointers and learn from you.

I recently read an article about a guy who caught a record Cusk here in the Lakes Region and it renewed my interest in ice fish- ing. He described how he caught it, what he was using for bait, and when and where he was.
This sparked my interest so I tried my hand at ice fishing again, for the first time this year,
with as much luck and lack of re- sults as in the past. I have a new respect for those who can get re- sults through the ice. It is not as easy as one would think. It’s not just a case of drilling a hole in the ice in an area where you think it might be a good place based on your past experience and knowl- edge of fishing, and where the fish should be. Or is it that sim-
ple and the fish just aren’t there? I have always subscribed to the theory that 90% of the fish are in 10% of the water. It’s your challenge as angler to decipher just where that 10% is, not al- ways an easy task, especially when you can’t see what is going on with the water that you are targeting. is being handcuffed by the body of water being covered by ice, so I have to attack it from a differ- ent angle, learn new tactics and techniques for success and apply them.
When fishing in any scenario other than ice, I can use all of my senses to gauge where the fish should be, but the ice takes away my ability to do this, so I am back to square one. I try to envision what is going on beneath the ice and take it from there. Depth, cover, forage, water temperature and clarity, sun angle, cloud cov- erage, moon phase.... all of these factors weigh heavily when I am fishing in any other season, so I imagine that they translate to
