Minot-Sleeper Library to Receive NH StateCommunity
Minot-Sleeper Library is pleased to announce that it has been awarded $25,635 in fund- ing through the Institute for Museum and Library Services’ “Grants to States” program. The grant program is part of the American Rescue Act Plan of 2021 and is being facilitated by the N.H. State Library.
Minot-Sleeper Library will use this grant award to partner with StoryCorps, New Hamp- shire Public Radio (NHPR), and the Bristol New Hampshire His- torical Society to record, archive, and share stories told by the peo- ple of the Newfound Region of New Hampshire. The project will invite Newfound Region community members of all ages and from diverse backgrounds to share their life experiences and stories. The project will cul- minate with a collection of re- corded conversations accessible to the public. In addition, NHPR will broadcast a special segment

“As pillars of our communi- ties, libraries and museums bring people together by providing im- portant programs, services, and collections. These institutions are trusted spaces where people can learn, explore and grow,” said IMLS Director Crosby Kemper. “IMLS is proud to support their initiatives through our grants as they educate and enhance their communities.”
Minot-Sleeper Library’s goal is to have the program up and running by March 2022 by con- ducting a virtual community ori- entation, with a completion date estimated for July 2022.

The project will begin with
pre-training and support for pro- gram planning provided by Sto- ryCorps. This will be followed by the library’s recruitment of facilitators who will participate in a 3-day intensive training with StoryCorps. The second phase of the project will be the record- ing sessions. StoryCorps will pro- vide the library with professional, portable audio equipment to re- cord conversations. StoryCorps will process all interviews, pro- vide each pair of participants with a copy of the conversation, and share the conversations in the StoryCorps Archive, the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress, and with the Minot-Sleeper Library.

Librarians know the power of stories. Journalists and other information professionals share this wisdom. Working together enables people to share their sto- ries more widely, expands access to new perspectives, and creates new ways for people to engage with one another. This project serves as an example of how a small and rural New Hampshire library can partner with a re- nowned national organization to scale a program that fits its com- munity.
“New Hampshire’s strong re- lationship with its public libraries was made even more evident during the past two years when li- brarians and their staffs were able to adjust services nimbly to con- tinue to meet the needs of their communities,” said N.H. State
