SEEK DINING EXCELLENCE

Regulatory Excellence
“Watching your residents dine brought tears to my eyes. This is the first time in my career that I have observed a meal the way OBRA ’87 intended it to be!” ––the words of a surveyor at the exit of the first survey after a pioneering facility embarked on a culture change journey.
Another surveyor stated “You aren’t doing anything ‘by the book’ but OBRA ’87 is an outcome-based survey process and I can’t find a single negative outcome!”
The OBRA ’87 mandate for quality of care and quality of life can be met in every long term care home with strong knowledge of the regulations and careful study of the guidelines. Such is clearly the intent of Tag F-240, Quality of Life which matches resident-centered care: “A facility must care for its residents in a manner and in an environment that promotes maintenance or enhancement of each resident’s quality of life.”
Our elders’ lives will be enhanced when regulatory excellence is combined with making the kitchen the heart of the home.
