6. Celebrate Birthdays
a-How do you celebrate family birthdays at home? Probably NOT with a birthday party of the month for all in the family who had birthdays that month! Probably with some celebration on the BIG DAY with close family and friends. Offer that special acknowledgement to each of your residents on the anniversary day of their birth. A flower, a card, a cake or even cupcakes to share with friends. Perhaps, the opportunity to chose the menu for that particular day to once again enjoy a favorite food prepared in a favorite way. Do whatever you can to create a birthday to remember for each resident on their birthday. A staff serenade adds more to the festivity, just like at the local restaurant birthday celebrations.
b-Happy Birthday! All ups, no downs!
c-Beware of fire code issues with lighted birthday candles. If candles are used, provide increased supervision and monitoring by staff. If candles are not used, find a special way to spotlight the birthday person and the birthday celebration. Follow sanitation and safety guidelines; honor resident requests while encouraging healthy choices; resident intake and enjoyment will provide the positive outcomes for regulatory success.
d-Encourage each resident to choose their birthday meal – a present in itself, or invite their family in to cook it as a surprise – another special treat!
