a-Think of the feeling of desperation you experience alone in a hotel room, hungry, but without wheels or change for the vending machines! How important it is to each of us to have a “stash” of favorite foods or beverages available, even if we do not eat them. Residents can benefit from that comfortable feeling of knowing that a favorite food or beverage is available to them when you can make “refrigerator rights” and “cupboard rights” available to them, either in their room or in a kitchenette nearby.
b-Families will generally stock these stashes of favorite foods and beverages, or resident funds can be used to have them purchased. Foods and beverages of choice make great resident gifts for family, friends, and staff wanting to do that little something extra.
c-As with choice in general, staff have an obligation to educate, remind and encourage residents on special diets to choose wisely. However, the
choice is the residents to make as supported by Federal Tag 242 “Self-Determination.”
d-Resident room refrigerators create an environment of home and choice for residents with significant cognitive loss. Stocked with safe-to-eat, healthy food choices, residents independence and autonomy are honored and their dignity is preserved.
