STAGE FOUR: HOUSEHOLD
3. Green House®
a-The Green House Project® is a new model for long term care in America, one
that borrows heavily from The Eden AlternativeTM and focuses primarily on improving the quality of life for frail elders. Green Houses are group homes that use a social
and rehabilitative model of care for elders needing skilled care, while also maximizing staff empowerment. They are designed to be home and to blend easily into their community or surroundings. Residents and staff share communally in meal preparation and service, with full kitchens that have no institutional appliances, but rather, a stove, refrigerator, and dishwasher like those in a family home.
b-Green Houses are a truly unique approach to long term care. Dining is true to home, and weight loss in pilot projects is minimized.
c-Green Houses are regulatory pilots at this point in time and are not replicable in everyday care settings. However, organizations in many states are negotiating with their regulatory overseers to finalize plans for Green Houses. Legislators in some states are making way for Green Houses by reviewing and revising state regulations that may stand in the way.
d-The Green Houses at Traceway in Tupelo, MS are the first in the nation and are enjoying great success.
